Obituary of William B. Bowman

William B. "Bill" Bowman slipped into God's loving arms on May 22, 2015, at his home in Laurel Springs surrounded by his loving family at the age of 97. Bill was born on November 10, 1917 in Taylors Bridge, DE. to the late Edward and the late Minnie. Bill married Helen (nee Smyth) on May 30, 1942 and they enjoyed 73 years of marriage. Devoted father of Lee (Charles, Sr.) Knecht and Mike Bowman. Proud grandfather of Kerri (Thomas) Petaccio, Charles Knecht, Jr. and William (Charity) Knecht. Proud great-grandfather Charli Jo Knecht, Kaylee Knecht, Ashley Knecht, Nicolette Petaccio and Daniel Petaccio. Bill is survived by brothers Samuel (Deanna) of Virginia, Roger and Fred (Ryoke) both of Florida, sisters Ethel Yardley of Florida and June Jones of Audubon. Bill is predeceased by his brothers Edward, Richard and Henry and his sisters Florence Ellis and Dorothy Nittinger. Bill proudly served his country with the National Guard 157th Field Artillery Unit from 1936 to 1939. He then served in the Merchant Marines and was award an Honorable Discharge from the Coast Guard for his service as an American Merchant Marine in Oceangoing service during World War II. He also served in the Haddon Fire Company #1 from 1950 to 1973 as an active member. He continued his service for another 42 years as an exempt member. Bill was member of Christ the King R.C. Church, St. Lawrence R.C. Church, Past President of Christ the King School PTA, assisted the Brothers from Ireland establish St. John of God School, Group Leader for Boys at the YMCA, Honorary member of K of C Marian Council, Member of American Legion Post #38, Past Vice-Presisdent of the NJ Municipal Coordinators Assoc., Coordinator for the Red Cross Surplus Food Program, Past President of the Golden Age Center, Member of St. Vincent dePaul Society, Past Member of the Laurel Springs Planning Board, Served on Laurel Springs Council from 1980 to 1996, Member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club. Bill worked for Texaco at the Eagle Point Oil Refinery for 32 years retiring in 1981. Bill also worked for many funeral homes in the Southern New Jersey area for over 20 years. After retirement, Bill and helen spent many happy years at their summer home in Brigantine. Bill spent most of his time helping his family, friends and community. Bill was most known for his service to the Laurel Springs Senior Citizens. In 2010 Bill was presented a lifetime Achievement Award by the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly. Family and friends are invited to attend Bill's viewing Saturday (5/30) 9:30 to 11:15 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish/St. Lawrence Church, 135 N. White Horse Pike at South Ave., Lindenwold, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Gate of Heaven Cem., Berlin.
