Obituary of William Edward Neumann

William Edward Neumann died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 13, 2015 surrounded by his family, after a courageous four year battle with esophageal cancer. He was born on February 7, 1948 in Winsted, CT, to the late William L. Neumann and the late Ruth S. (nee Avery) Neumann. He was raised in NJ and graduated from North Arlington High School in 1966. He served in the Army from 1966 to 1969. He was stationed at the Northern Warfare Training Center in Ft. Greely, Alaska as an instructor. Upon discharge, he graduated from Ocean Co. College and then attended Rutgers Univ. in Camden. There he met and married his loving wife of 40 years, Carol Sorg from Cramer Hill, Camden. Bill and Carol lived and raised their family in West Berlin for 33 years. While there he became an active community member who was on the School Board, a varsity Club member, and coach. At that time, he was also a member of the NJ National Guard from 1983-1991. He retired as a captain from the Albert C. Wagner Correctional Facility (Gladiator School) after 25 years of service and was known as A/K/A "Walkin Tall". Most importantly, Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He was also highly respected in the neighborhood and became a mentor to several of his children's friends. He was an avid fan of his children, Cara and Billy who played soccer, softball, football and wrestling, and he also followed his grandchildren and nieces and nephews sports and school activities. Bill was also a member of Mt. Holly Lodge #14 F. & A. M. Surrogate mothers played a crucial role in Bill's upbringing; Anita Avery, Helen Kelly, Lee Groeschke, Marian Itell and Josephine Sorg. All great teachers. He is survived by his loving wife Carol J. Beloved children Cara Curran and husband Matthew of Washington Twp. and William and wife Kristina of Mullica hill.
