Obituary of Mary Kathryn Courtney
Mary Kathryn Courtney, nee McCandless, on October 16, 2021, age 79 of Elk Township, NJ, formerly of Haddon Heights, NJ. Beloved wife of the late Dennis M. Courtney. Dear mother of Karen Courtney (the late Stephen Roberts), Christopher Courtney (Gail), Ann Courtney (Owen Collins), Jennifer Shoemaker (James) and Sean Courtney. Loving grandmother of McKelvey, James, Arden, Colin and Liam. Cherished close friend of Bruce Sanville.
Mary earned a BFA in Fine Art at Wayne State University. She later attended Gloucester County College to become a registered nurse. After she retired from nursing, she became a stained-glass artist. After moving to Monroeville, she started repairing antique stained-glass windows. This caused her to have increased lead levels in her blood, so she switched to creating stained glass mosaics. Mary was a member of the Gloucester County and Salem County Art Leagues. Her work in stained glass, pastels, and recycled materials sculpture have earned her local and state awards.
Mary has been a long-time member of the Followers Bible Study, based at St. Rose of Lima in Haddon Heights, and Cursillo. An avid book reader, Mary was a member of the St Bridget's book club. Mary was a member of the St. Bridget's Church Choir and the Camden Diocesan Gospel Choir. She was also a member of the Gloucester County Widows and Widowers club. Mary was an active member of the Lake Gillman community, serving on the board and lending her assistance to countless social events. Mary enjoyed line dancing and attending live music events; and was a lifelong animal lover and dog owner.
