Obituary of Joseph C. Deegan

Joseph C. Deegan, of Palmyra passed away peacefully on September 26, 2020, at age 60.

Devoted father of Mandy Leathers, Margo (Nick) DuVal, Carly Deegan, and Cody Deegan. Adoring Grandfather of Kendall and Kimber. Loving son of the late Joseph G. and the late Maureen T. (nee McDade) Deegan. Dear brother of Diane and Eddie Tevis of West Berlin, the late Maureen and Skip McGlashon, and the late Michael Deegan. Survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins and loyal friends.

Joey, a lifetime Philadelphia sports and Notre Dame football fan, was born in Riverside, NJ & grew up in Palmyra. He graduated from Sacred Heart School, Riverton in 1975 and from Palmyra High School in 1978. While in school, Joey was an avid athlete. He played sports on the CYO team. He excelled in basketball and baseball as a hitter and was one of the best Second Basemen.  In 1978, he was the Burlington County League Batting Champion, finishing the year with a .487 average. He was selected to the following All Star Teams: 1978 All Freedom, All County, and All South Jersey First Teams at second base, and All-State Honorable Mention- 2nd base. In 2005, he was inducted into the Palmyra High Hall of Fame for his impressive baseball record. He later shared his love of baseball with his son, Cody, as a Little League coach.

Joey was a renowned mischief maker as a child. A quote from a former teacher said, “I taught school at Sacred Heart in the early 1970's. Loved every moment, the kids were great...even Joe Deegan!!”

Joey worked for United Parcel Service for 15 years. He lived in Delran, NJ for many years before moving with his family to Clearwater, FL in 2004. There, he worked for the City of Clearwater Parks Department on the beach and cheered on his Phillies at many, many Spring Training games. He returned back to NJ in 2011, where he worked for Nationwide Valet Mt. in Holly before retiring.

Forever proud of his Irish heritage, Joey loved cooking, watching movies (mostly comedies), a good time, and being the life of the party! He could always be found singing as loud as possible, telling extravagant stories and cracking corny jokes to anyone who would listen, but also enjoyed talking sports stats and politics. One of his favorite sayings recently was “If you’re not laughing, you’re not living life.” He will be remembered for his humor and his love for his family and friends.

Joey was also an avid dog lover and enjoyed spending time with his boxer pups, Lily, Rocky, and Violet. In lieu of flowers, Joey’s family requests donations in his memory be made to the Florida Boxer Rescue at Florida Boxer Rescue Inc., 5753 Hwy 85 North #4243, Crestview, FL 32536-9365.

Services for Joey will be held privately at this time but his Burial and Life Celebration will be announced and held at a future date.
