Battiste "John"

Of Somerdale died on April 7, 2010, at Underwood Mem. Hosp., Woodbury, from complications of pneumonia, at the age of 87.
Husband of the late Carmela (nee Petito). Father of Marie Koehler-Davenport of Haddon Twp, Joseph J. Novella, Sr. of Voorhees, John B. Novella. I of West Berlin, and Ralph J. Novella of Somerdale. Brother of Ralphal Novella of Westmont, Gloria Linn and Salvatore Novella, both of Florida and Guiseppe Novella of North Carolina. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren.
John was born and raised in Camden. In his early youth he went to C C camp for boys. He worked for a short time at Spencer Industries in Phila. before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. Learning to work with sheet metal both at Camp and Spencers, he worked on blimps and ships during the war. Joining the Active Reserves after the war ended he went back to Spencers and was recalled to duty during Korea from 1950 to 1952 and retired from the Navy in 1968. He also worked at the Phila. Naval Shipyard from 1969 to 1979. He was a member of the Somerdale Police Dept. from 1960 to 1986. He was a member of the Somerdale Fire Comp were he earned life member and exempt status. He was a member of the International Ornamental Iron Union # 502. and a member of the Telco Sportsman Club of Atco, where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 9:45 to 10:45 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish/ Our Lady of Grace Church, 35 N. White Horse Pike, Somerdale, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Gate of Heaven Cem. Berlin. In lieu of flowers, John's family requests donations be made in his memory to Deborah Hosp. Foundation 20 Pine Mill Road, Browns Mills, NJ 08015
